Jessica 6′s new album sees a deep musical infusion of R’n'B, noir pop and a hint of disco soul. As a debut album from the New Yorkers, it definitely demonstrates the potential Jessica 6 has to continue producing great records. Jessica 6 formed through their connections with the infamous Hercules and Love Affair, on the New York disco scene. The group’s name arose from a character in the cult classic film Logan’s Run, but they’ve taken Jessica to a new place.
The album provides the perfect soundtrack to a night full of fun and frolics. White Horse provides the warm-up, as pulsing beats mimic the rhythm of your own heart. Prisoner of Love and In The Heat head in a slightly alternative direction and throw you right in at the deep end: disco heat. The vocal dynamics used in ‘See the Light’ demonstrate the group’s skill; Ruiz and Antony’s voices complement each other so well in Prisoner of Love, and blend seamlessly together to form beautiful melodies. There are definitely ethnic tones which hint to the culturally-diverse make up of the group, with Middle Eastern elements featuring on See The Light. Jessica 6 even provide a little bit of ’70s love-making music with the seductive tones featured on Good to Go. Almost reminiscent of the great Isaac Hayes musical productions, but with strings that could find it compare with Bond theme songs of that era.
Sunset Park native, Nomi Ruiz, injects her adoration of freestyle and underground hip-hop into the album in the most discreet yet effective way. The balance of up-tempo and more mellowed out songs is pleasing, although you never really escape the feeling that you’re seated in a old-school Miami club lounge.
Jessica 6’s ‘See The Light’ is released on 28th May by Peacefrog Records, while tour dates will be announced later on in the year.
